2023 Persen House Season Planning Underway

The 2023 season planning for the Matthewis Persen House Museum and Cultural Heritage Center is underway!  Would your organization like to serve as a Guest Host on a Saturday during the season?  As a Guest Host, you are welcome to hold a special event, lecture, exhibit, re-enactment or simply greet guests.  The Persen House has welcomed over 40,000 visitors from all 50 states and 62 countries since opening for tours in 2010, making it an exceptional venue to showcase Ulster County's history and culture.

5/28 1st Ulster Militia Revolutionary War Reenactors at Persen House

Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack is pleased to announce the opening of the Matthewis Persen House Museum on Saturday, May 28, with special guests Revolutionary War Era Reenactors the 1st Ulster Militia.  The Matthewis Persen House located at 74 John Street in uptown Kingston, at the corner of John and Crown Streets. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

6/15 Sojourner Truth Original Documents at the Ulster County Courthouse

Decades before she took her fabled name, famed abolitionist and women's rights activist Sojourner Truth was born into slavery here in Ulster County under the name Isabella.  It was as Isabella that the young Truth took action to secure the return of her 5-year son, Peter, who had been illegally sold to in plantation in Alabama.  With the help of local attorneys, Isabella filed a Habeas Corpus Petition in the Ulster County Courthouse in March of 1828.  And it was this Isabella that prevailed on that Petition for her son’s freedom, marking the first ti

The Ulster County Clerk’s Office is pleased to participate in the 2022 Juneteenth Commemoration and New York State Path Through History Weekend.  The Clerk’s Office will be hosting “Original Document Day” on Saturday, June 18th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Matthewis Persen House Museum, 74 John Street, Kingston.  Documents related to Sojourner Truth, as well as an exhibit about her life, will be on display.  Admission is free and all are welcome.

 

6/18 Commemorating Juneteenth & NYS Path Through History Weekend with Sojourner Truth Related “Original Document Day”
